Youth biathlon kicks off Oct. 2 at YMCA
The Hernando County Family YMCA invites youth ages 6 to 16 to participate in the YMCA Youth Biathlon that will be at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 at the facility, 1300 Mariner Blvd. Participants will be swimming and running.
The cost is free for facility members, $5 for program members and $10 for nonmembers.
Other activities offered at the Y include:
• Group personal training. Participants train with a small group of four people, twice a week for $79 a month.
• Youth sports conditioning. This is a six-week program designed to improve the physical performance of young athletes. It can be geared toward a specific sport, activity or to enhance overall performance. Classes are on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Animal Services has new business hours
Hernando County Code Enforcement and Animal Services has announced new visiting hours. The office will no longer be open on Saturdays, but will be open later on Mondays to accommodate residents outside normal business hours.
Effective Oct. 1, visitors can stop by the office from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays, and from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. The facility, which is at 19450 Oliver St., will be closed weekends and holidays.

KofC dinner event honors Columbus Day
The Knights of Columbus, St. Jude Council 6383 will host a Columbus Day Dinner Dance Oct. 9 at the KofC Hall, 10470 Spring Hill Drive.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6. The menu includes chicken parmesan and stuffed shells, salad, bread, coffee and cake. MGL Music will provide music from 7 to 10 p.m.

Hospice offers help for grieving adults
HPH Hospice will offer a "Grief's Journey" Support Group from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Sept. 29 at the office at 12260 Cortez Blvd.
This is an eight-week program for newly bereaved adults or those just coming to terms with the death of a loved one. The group is led by a hospice bereavement counselor.

Nature center slates a variety of events
Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following events and programs:
• Butterfly Workshop, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Bring binoculars and a butterfly field guide. Provided by Marc Minno.
• Big Pine Fall Wildflower and Butterfly Walk, 9-11 a.m. Tuesday. Meet at the Big Pine Tract off Old Crystal River Road, north of Brooksville. Bring binoculars and a butterfly field guide.
• Reptile and Amphibian Festival, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 2. Includes exhibits, walks, talks and demonstrations, a kids' activity station, puppet show and more.
• Janet Butterfield Brooks Preserve Butterfly and Wildflower Walk, 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 5. Meet at the intersection of Buczak Road and County Road 476 (Centralia Road). Call for directions and reservations.
• Junior Butterfly Watching Workshop, 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 16. For ages 16 and younger (children younger than 7 must be accompanied by an adult). Participants will learn some of the common butterflies and observe them in their natural habitat.
• It's Not the Camera, It's the Photographer!, 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 23. Join Karl and Kathleen Nichter for this introductory basic digital nature photography class.
• Chinsegut Night Walk, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 29. Participants will listen and look for bats, frogs, owls and other creatures of the night. Bring a flashlight and insect repellent.
• Pioneer Day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 6. Includes living arts demonstrations of the past, such as hand-cranked ice cream, broom making, lumber jack demonstration, horse-drawn wagon rides, ropemaking, open hearth cooking, archery exhibit and numerous other activities and demonstrations.

Register online for early learning event
The Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties has announced online registration is now being accepted for the third annual Early Learning Conference, which will be Oct. 23 at Crews Lake Middle School, 15166 Shady Hills Road.
Representatives throughout Florida will provide 48 trainings on various topics in subject areas of infant and toddlers, preschool, school age, family child care home, inclusion, parent and families, and administration. Select trainings will be offered in Spanish.
Participants will earn seven in-service hours with continuing education units available for purchase.
Headlining this year's event will be early childhood speaker and author Jeff A. Johnson, who will present "Finding Your Smile Again."

Comedian to perform on clubhouse stage
All Stars Entertainment will kick off its 2010-11 season with comedian Johnny Roberts at 6:55 p.m. Oct. 4 at Brookridge Clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St., west of Brooksville.
Roberts has performed his "clean" show in venues from the Grand Ole Opry to showrooms of Las Vegas.
The show includes cabaret seating (tables) for those who would like to bring their own snacks and drinks, as well as auditorium seating (chairs only). Raffle tickets (50/50) will be sold before the show for $3 for nine tickets. Complimentary coffee and doughnuts will be served.

Philippine-American Association ball Oct. 2
The Hernando County Philippine-American Association will host its Fifth Year Anniversary Ball and Induction of Officers from 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court.

The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will provide two financial management classes at the West Hernando/Staffordene T. Foggia Branch Library, 6335 Blackbird Ave.:
• Developing an Effective Spending Plan, 10 a.m. Oct. 6. Identify spending leaks, establish consistent saving habits, prepare for emergencies and begin to focus on a future financial plan.
• Effective Credit Management, 2 p.m. Oct. 15. Credit can cause severe financial problems. Those who have the skills in handling credit will be faced with fewer delinquencies and bankruptcies.

Dawn Center needs donations of artwork
The Dawn Center is collecting donations of artwork for its booth for the upcoming Sonshine Arts and Crafts Festival that will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 6 at Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Ave. W.
Donations of handmade arts and crafts are wanted and can be a variety of items such as a painting, bird houses, sweaters and other creations. Funds raised will support the organization's violence prevention efforts.

Concert series ticket sales end Thursday
Thursday is the deadline to purchase season tickets for the Community Performing Arts Guild's 2010-2011 Concert Series.
The series at Mariner United Methodist Church, 7079 Mariner Blvd., includes six concerts, plus one concert for subscribers only.
Subscribers choose from a 2 or 7 p.m. performance and are guaranteed a seat in the center section.

Girl Scouts to stage kickoff event Oct. 9
The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida will kick off the 2010-11 Girl Scout year with a "What's Your Story" event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 9 at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N W.C. MacInnes Place.
The event is open to Girl Scouts and all girls in grades K-12 who are interested in becoming member. Families and adults interested in becoming volunteers are also welcome.
Throughout the day, visitors will have the chance to participate in a variety of activities such as computer animation, digital poetry, drama, dance, painting and photography, which will be geared at helping girls find their voice and tell their stories.
Event sponsors include the Florida Aquarium, Glazier Children's Museum, Great Explorations Children's Museum, MOSI, Radio Disney and Lowry Park Zoo. Radio Disney's Rockin' Road Crew will entertain the crowds from 10 a.m. to noon, with music and activities.

Adult literacy classes available for free
HEART Literacy Adult Education offers classes in reading, math, language arts, ESOL (English as a second lounge) and free pre-GED testing.
Adults 18 years or older interested in finishing a high school degree, or brushing up on reading, math or language arts, are invited to stop by one of the four local sites offering the free classes and sign up. No appointments are necessary.

PHCC workshop offers resume writing tips
Pasco-Hernando Community College will host a resume workshop at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in room A-249 at the PHCC North Campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd.
The workshop will cover the latest trends in preparing a successful resume and offer tips on what employers value in these essential documents. Participants will be assisted in drafting and updating their resumes, and should bring a flash drive or other memory device.
