CLEARWATER — An 83-year-old man turned the tables on a would-be robber Thursday when he pulled a gun after being knocked to the ground.
The robber took off, but was followed by a passer-by.
Police arrested Bryan Treloar, a transient, on a charge of attempted strong arm robbery. He was in the Pinellas County jail Friday in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Police said Treloar walked up to Charles Place of Clearwater in the parking lot of Costello's Restaurant, 1724 N Fort Harrison at 11:20 a.m.
Treloar grabbed Place from behind and tried to remove his wallet, police said.
Place resisted and held onto Treloar's arm as they struggled. Treloar knocked Place to the ground, police said, and Place pulled out a 25-calliber semi-automatic handgun.
Place pointed it at Treloar and told him to get away from him, police said. Treloar ran away but was followed by a passerby. Police soon arrived and arrested Treloar.
Place, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, wound up with small cuts on his hand.
