CLEARWATER — Beware, first day of school motorists.

When Pinellas County students return on Tuesday, Clearwater police will be positioned around the city to ensure that drivers and pedestrians obey traffic rules around school zones, crosswalks and bus stops.

Officers will look for violations during student arrival and dismissal times. Speeding violations in school zones carry the following minimum fines:

• Between 1-9 miles over the speed limit: $156.00

• Between 10-14 miles: $306.00

• Between 15-19 miles: $406.00

• Between 20-29 miles: $456.00

• More than 30: court appearance.

Failure to stop for a school bus when the stop signals are activated and the stop arm is extended will result in a $271.00 penalty.
