The contest for Pinellas County Commissioner Susan Latvala's North Pinellas seat has been punctuated by attacks on the county's spending during the boom years and the fallout that resulted.
Democrat Bob Hackworth wants voters on Nov. 2 to hold Latvala accountable. He's criticized the county's job losses and the causes behind a shortfall of up to $80 million in the budget over two years. He also has taken aim at her six-figure campaign chest and her ties to companies that do business with the county.
Latvala asks voters to shake off his attacks and trust her word on how the county has managed public money since she joined the board in 2000. The Republican incumbent says she has worked to "right size" the county and Hackworth is misleading voters about her record. Her campaign contributions, she said, show the support she has earned in office.
