BROOKSVILLE - With little comment from the public, Hernando County commissioners approved a $344.9 million total budget for 2010-11 after the final public hearing on Tuesday.
The budget, which includes a $96.3 million general fund, is partially funded by a county-wide property tax rate equal to last year's county-wide rate of 6.3431 mills. For the owner of a $150,000 house with the $50,000 homestead exemption, that rate amounts to $634.31 in tax to support county services.
The budget compares to last year's total spending plan of $392.8 million and last year's general fund of $111.2 million. At the end of the hearing, county officials noted that they expect to face a budget shortfall ranging from $5 million to $7 million next year.
Commissioners reiterated that they want regular reports on how county departments are working toward the reductions needed to absorb that hit.
