TAMPA — The Tampa Police Department is inviting the public to learn what it takes to be a cop by joining the 2010 Citizen's Police Academy.

Participants will get to ride with officers on patrol, test themselves with tactical exercises and meet the K-9 team, among other behind-the-scenes opportunities.

The free academy meets for three hours every Tuesday night, starting Sept. 21, for nine weeks. Each week, participants will learn about a different aspect of law enforcement.

The deadline for applications is Sept. 10. To reserve a spot, call (813) 242-5406 or e-mail Cpl. Mike Flynn at michael.flynn@tampagov.net. For more information and to download an application, visit www.tampagov.net/police.
