Whitlock named arts, science dean at PHCC
John Whitlock was recently named the dean of arts and sciences for Pasco-Hernando Community College. Whitlock most recently served as faculty chair for research/Ph.D. programs at Capella University in Minneapolis and as program faculty and a senior fellow in the Center for Excellence in Public Leadership in the College of Professional Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He also served as regional director in South Florida for the School of Continuing Education at Saint Leo University and as director of weekend and evening programs at Saint Leo University. Whitlock earned his doctorate in sociology at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He earned a master's degree in sociology from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., and a bachelor's degree in sociology from St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.

Candidates speak at forum Tuesday
A candidates forum will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Center for the Arts at Wesley Chapel, 30651 Wells Road. Candidates for state representative, County Commission and School Board will be questioned by moderators from the St. Petersburg Times and the Tampa Tribune. Candidates for Mosquito Control Board will be given several minutes to talk about their candidacy. The event will be preceded by a "meet and greet" with the candidates at 6:30 p.m. The event is being organized by the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the other Pasco chambers and corporate sponsor Tampa Electric/Peoples Gas.
Relax and reflect during sessions
Feeling stressed? Atonement Lutheran Church in Wesley Chapel will offer six Wednesday night quiet times called "Nights of Reflection" at 7 p.m. starting this week at the church on State Road 54 between Saddlebrook Resort and Boyette Road. The 30- to 40-minute sessions are open to the public and include biblical and other spiritual readings and quiet reflection time aimed at helping people unwind from their daily routines with candlelight and soothing music. A variety of seating is available, from floor pillows to prayer kneelers to chairs. Participants are invited to bring yoga mats. Child care will be available if the number of requests warrant it. Residents can make a free, 30-minute appointment for a consultation with an attorney affiliated with Helping the Elderly with Legal Problems (H.E.L.P.) starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday at CARES Rao Musunuru Center, 12417 Clock Tower Parkway in Hudson, or on Oct. 28 at CARES Claude Pepper Senior Center, 6640 Van Buren St. in New Port Richey.
