Deputies say man dug up, sold light posts
More than $90,000 in decorative streetlights from the new Bella Terra equestrian community were stolen and sold for scrap, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say Alfred Edward Bernard, 47, dug up 88 black aluminum light posts and hauled them to a recycling company for cash. He pocketed $3,253.80 over a two-week period — until Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative reported the stolen lights and deputies traced the poles to him, a sheriff's report said. "The lights were not energized and that's how he was able" to remove them without getting electrocuted, Withlacoochee spokesman David Lambert said, noting the Bella Terra subdivision off East Road is still under construction. "It's very dangerous messing with electricity. You can get killed." Bernard, of 14802 Overhill Drive, was arrested Thursday on 19 counts of dealing in stolen property, as well as violating his probation on previous charges of possession of a controlled substance by fraud. He remains without bail at the Land O'Lakes jail.
