Humane Society seeks award nominations
The Humane Society of the Nature Coast is accepting nominations for the 2010 Judy Schwartz Humanitarian Award, which recognizes an individual, organization or corporation in Hernando, Citrus or Pasco county who has had a significant impact on animal welfare during the past year. An individual's impact can be through their time, donations, campaigning for legislative reform or personal rescue of animals. The award is in memory of Schwartz, who dedicated her life to wildlife rescue. The deadline to submit nominees is Sept. 3. For information, call the shelter at (352) 796-2711.
Swiftmud grants are for teachers
The Southwest Florida Water Management District is accepting applications for its Splash! school grants for hands-on water resources projects. The grants provide teachers with funding for classroom projects that focus on water quality, natural systems, water conservation, alternative water sources, flood protection or watersheds. Grants up to $5,000 are available for public, private, charter and homeschool groups on a reimbursement basis. Applications are due by Sept. 10.
