Palm Harbor High IB program could be safe
Palm Harbor University High School IB students and parents, you've been heard. After hearing your outcry over her plan to phase out the highly touted magnet program, Pinellas County school superintendent Julie Janssen said Friday she's going to ask the School Board to consider a new plan. The retooled proposal would reduce the size of the International Baccalaureate program at Palm Harbor while adding additional IB programs at Countryside and Largo high schools. CLEARWATER
City welcomes teacher from Japan
Clearwater will host a middle school teacher from Nagano, Japan, as part of its annual sister city exchange program. Kenzo Kawashima will arrive Sunday and will live with a volunteer family. During his monthlong visit, Kawashima will observe classes and give presentations at seven area schools: Bayside High School, Carwise Middle School, Chi Chi Rodriguez Academy, Countryside High School, Dunedin Highland Middle School, Tarpon Springs Middle School and Vincero Academy. He will tour city attractions, including Beach Walk and Bright House Field. Clearwater and Nagano have been sister cities since 1959. Guard to present colors in Tampa
If you're heading to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Sunday, keep an eye out for the Clearwater Fire and Rescue Honor Guard. Seven members of the honor guard will present colors during the national anthem, before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the New Orleans Saints. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Library to host sustainability talk
The Clearwater Main Library will present a program on sustainable lifestyles at 2 p.m. Sunday. The discussion will center around creating an urban farm while reducing your carbon footprint. Tampa
Charity football game is today
The Tampa Bay Storm will play the Tampa Bay Sentinels, a football team composed of local public safety employees, in today's inaugural 2010 Public Safety Memorial Bowl. The charity flag football game honors fallen Tampa police Officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab. Curtis and Kocab were shot to death during a traffic stop in June. The event will be held at 2 p.m. at Tampa Catholic High School, 4630 N Rome Ave. in Tampa. Entertainment before and after the game will be provided by the Madhatter Band. There will be a K-9 demonstration during halftime. Tickets are $5 at the gate.
