Remembering those lost to drug, alcohol abuse

A candlelight vigil to remember those who have died in Pinellas County from drug- and alcohol-related abuse will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Largo Central Park, 105 Central Park Drive. The free event, in its second year locally, will be hosted by the Pinellas County chapter of Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Operation PAR and the LiveFree Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Pinellas County. Organizers expect several hundred people to attend. Vigils are being held by NOPE chapters throughout the nation. Breakfast welcomes storybook characters

Registration has started for this year's Character Breakfast at the Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave. Kids, ages 8 and younger, are invited to dress up as a favorite storybook character and join Belle and friends for a breakfast and lots of interactive games. There will be two seatings, 8 and 10 a.m. The cost is $15 per couple; $5 for each additional person. Deadline to register is Nov. 4. For more information or to register, call (727) 518-3016.

Swing dance takes on a Halloween theme

Tickets are on sale for the Largo Community Center's "Halloswing on Halloween'' on Saturday. The center, 65 Fourth St., will hold a costume parade and contest along with its regularly scheduled Saturday swing dance. Bring a bag of treats to share. The schedule includes beginner lessons from 7 to 8 p.m. The dance will be held from 8 to 11. The cost is $9 in advance; $10 day of show. Call (727) 518-3131.

Church seeks donations for holiday distribution

The People That Love Church and Mission needs turkeys and canned and nonperishable foods to distribute to the poor and needy throughout the holiday season. The Salvation Army, 3800 Ninth Ave. N., is seeking individuals and groups interested in selling new and gently used household items, arts and crafts, jewelry, antiques, collectibles and other home decorations at its Holiday Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 13. Help for female veterans returning from service

Bay Pines VA Healthcare System is sponsoring Lady Veterans Night Out to welcome home and assist women returning from service. The event is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church Activity Center, 11220 Oakhurst Road. Female veterans will receive information about services available to help transition back to civilian life, local colleges and universities, and free pampering services.
