Jazz historian, poet will read work at library

Poet and jazz historian Dave Oliphant will read from his works at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library at Saint Leo University. Oliphant, who is retired from teaching at the University of Texas at Austin, has written eight collections of poetry, including Backtracking (2006); three books on jazz history, including Jazz Mavericks of the Lone Star State (2007); and an autobiography, Harbingers of Books to Come: A Texan's Literary Life (2009). A reception and signing will follow the reading. The university is at 33701 State Road 52, 4 miles east of Interstate 75.

Body near gun a suspected suicide

Officers suspect the man found dead in the woods near Oelsner Street on Friday committed suicide. Police were called around 5:30 p.m. with reports that a man was armed and suicidal near Oelsner Street and Limit Drive, Port Richey police Chief Dave Brown said. When officers arrived, they discovered Gerald Lee Martin, who lived on Oelsner Street, laying dead near a shotgun.

• Cultivating and Cooking with Herbs, 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 6 in Clayton Hall at the Pasco Cooperative Extension building on the Pasco County Fairgrounds, 36702 State Road 52, Dade City. This free program will include instructions on how to grow a variety of culinary herbs. Samples will be shared. Advance registration is strongly suggested.
