CLEARWATER — A hotel clerk was robbed early Saturday just before dropping off the day's money, police said.

The clerk, who works for the Economy Inn at 20788 U.S. 19, was leaving the property Saturday morning with an envelope containing an undisclosed amount of money when a man approached him in the lobby. The man demanded the envelope, and the clerk handed him it, police said.

The man took the cash, then demanded money from the register, police said. The clerk retrieved money from the register and gave it to the robber, who left on foot.

Clearwater police searched the area but found no one.

Police described the robber as an unshaven black man in his late 20s, 5 feet 8 and 175 pounds, with short dreadlocks and a gold tooth. He was wearing green cargo pants and a dirty tank top.
