TAMPA — The Salvation Army will not replace former community liaison Jim Norman, Maj. Larry Broome said Thursday.
Although army spokesman Steve Dick said Wednesday that the state senator-elect's job at the charity eventually would be filled, that is not going to happen, Broome said.
"It must have been incorrect, if that's what (Dick) said. We are not replacing Jim Norman," Broome said.
Norman's duties have been distributed to other Salvation Army staffers, he added.
Norman said previously his work involved traveling the state to assist the Salvation Army and help its centers maintain good relations with communities.
In August, the charity said Norman worked with local advisory boards on funding issues, among other things.
"He has worked for us full-time for over 30 years in a professional position. … It goes without saying that he could make more money elsewhere," the Salvation Army said at the time.
Norman, an outgoing Hillsborough County commissioner, retired from the Salvation Army this week after the charity was criticized for paying him a $95,000 salary despite the demands of his county job and political campaign.
In announcing Norman's retirement, the Salvation Army said his new responsibilities as a senator would make it impossible for him to fulfill his duties with the charity. It said his other troubles — including an election challenge and an FBI investigation — were not factors.
