ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg man was accused Thursday of breaking into a church and stealing a collection envelope.
His take: $37. But damage to the church was estimated at $500 to $600.
Police said Leandra White, 32, pried open the front and office doors at Christ Lutheran Church, 3451 30 Ave. N, on Oct. 30. Church members found the office ransacked and an empty envelope that had contained $37.
Police said they found White's fingerprints on the envelope. He faces a burglary charge.
Pastor Fred Smith said a church member volunteered to fix the doors for less than the estimated cost. He said the church has since upgraded security.
