Disaster declaration Sought after freeze
In one of his last acts as governor, Charlie Crist has written to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack seeking an emergency disaster declaration. Crist's office says the declaration would allow Florida farmers access to disaster relief for the damage done to crops by freezing temperatures.
Fire chief will retire
The longtime chief of Hillsborough County Fire Rescue is stepping down. William "Bill" Nesmith, 62, is retiring Jan. 15. He became fire chief in 1996 after moving from Tampa Fire Rescue, where he had spent 24 years as a firefighter. During Nesmith's tenure, the county fire department added eight fire stations and merged with Hillsborough County Emergency Medical Services. A farewell party will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at the agency's headquarters, 2709 E Hanna Ave.
