First female mayor of Dunedin dies at 77

DUNEDIN — Judy Gould was preparing to do her part for the opening of Toronto Blue Jays spring training in 1977.

But someone saw her carrying a baseball and warned it was for Dunedin's mayor to toss a ceremonial first pitch.

" 'Excuse me, but I am the mayor,' " Gould's brother, Jerome Caplan, recalled her saying.

Ms. Gould, who was the first female mayor of Dunedin, died at age 77 Saturday at Suncoast Hospice House Brookside in Palm Harbor, her brother said. She had myelodysplasia, commonly called MDS, a blood disease.

She joined the Dunedin City Commission in 1972 and won the election for mayor in 1976. She ran for the Florida House in 1978, but lost in the Republican primary to Pete Dunbar.
