TAMPA — A federal judge sentenced a man to 62 years in prison Tuesday for his role in the robbery of a Waffle House that led to police chase in 2007.
Frederick Wardell Mitchell, 29, of Tampa was found guilty of armed robbery and carjacking in October. Trial testimony showed Mitchell and two other men walked into the Waffle House at 509 N West Shore Blvd. in August 2007 carrying guns and demanding money and jewelry from employees and customers.
The men then carjacked a customer and led the police on a chase before jumping out of the car and running, the testimony said. An officer testified that Mitchell raised his gun at officers while he was running, prompting them to shoot. One suspect remained behind and was arrested, while Mitchell and another man ran.
