SPOKANE, Wash. — A Gonzaga University student from Tampa rescued a suicidal man who jumped into the Spokane River on Friday.
ROTC cadet Christopher Smith was on a morning run with two other cadets when another jogger told them someone was in the river. Smith dangled from a ledge above the water to reach the man.
According to the Spokesman-Review, Smith pulled the man from the river and tried to keep him warm until firefighters arrived. As they waited, the man, who was not injured, told Smith he wanted to die because he was out of work and recently divorced.
