Flotilla 15-8 is offering boating safety courses
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 15-8, will offer the following courses:
• Boating Skills and Seamanship, 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 7 to Oct. 26. This is the auxiliary's eight-week boating course that covers safety, navigation and rules, radio, weather, Florida law and other topics. Completion of this class satisfies the requirements for the Florida Boating Safety ID Card. The cost is $50.
• About Boating Safely, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 11. This one-day course is a basic overview of boating and safety, which includes all information to qualify for the Florida Boating Safety ID card. Participants should bring snack and a sack lunch. The cost is $30, which includes a text.
• Navigating with Global Positioning System, 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 20. Learn how to use global-positioning systems, or GPS, to get to one's destination and back safely, how to program waypoints, develop routes and interface GPS routes with a nautical chart. The cost is $35, which includes a text on the use of GPS.
• Weekend Navigator. This is a comprehensive course designed for experienced and novice powerboat and sailboat operators. It is designed to educate boating enthusiasts in skills required for a safe voyage on a variety of waters and boating conditions. Call for dates and details.

Harvest Moon will have handmade crafts
The Citrus County Craft Council's 21st annual Harvest Moon Craft Show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the National Guard Armory Crystal River, 8551 W Venable St.
This indoor/outdoor event includes numerous crafters with stained glass art, decorative painted items, ceramics, floral arrangements, handcrafted greeting cards, jewelry, wood items, porcelain dolls, handbags and other items. Items will be raffled throughout the day. Food and refreshments will be available.
Admission and parking are free. The show benefits the Humanitarians of Florida in Crystal River. Donations of pet supplies are appreciated. For information, call (352) 726-1991.

Like doo-wop music? Make plans for show
A benefit concert featuring Tommy Mara and the Legends of Doo-Wop will be Oct. 17 at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive. Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner is at 4:30 and showtime is at 5:30.
Tickets are $50 per person, which includes the buffet dinner and 90-minute show. A cash bar will be available.
The event is sponsored by the NYC Retired Firefighters of Spring Hill Chapter 343. All proceeds will benefit the Sept. 11 memorial at the Post 10209.

Big Band Bash starts jazz society's season
The Hernando Jazz Society will open its 2010-11 season with a Big Band Bash at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Wellington Clubhouse, 400 Wexford Ave.
The event will include entertainment by musicians from Hernando County high schools. Cash bar and light menu will be available.

Get back to nature at Chinsegut's events
Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following upcoming events and programs:
• Incredible Edibles, 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10. This is an edible plant/wild game program. Bring a place setting and camp chair.
• Backpacking and Water Camping seminar, 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 21. Presented by Jim Garrison, the seminar will include hands-on demonstrations.
• Chinsegut Butterfly Workshop, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 25. Bring binoculars and a butterfly field guide.
• Big Pine Fall Wildflower and Butterfly Walk, 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 28. Meet at the Big Pine Tract off Old Crystal River Road, north of Brooksville. Bring binoculars and a butterfly field guide.
• Reptile and Amphibian Festival, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 2. Includes exhibits and demonstrations, a puppet show, walks and talks, a frog-calling contest and other activities.
The programs are free and at the nature center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road, north of Brooksville.

Service will honor Sept. 11 attack victims
The Retired NYC Firefighters Chapter 343 will present a Sept. 11 memorial ceremony on Sept. 11 in the memorial garden at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive.
The site will open at 9 a.m., with the ceremony starting at 9:30 p.m. Coffee and donuts will be served.
The event is to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. For information, call (352) 796-0398.

Cough up some cash for Humane Society Fur Ball
The Humane Society of the Nature Coast is seeking sponsors for the seventh annual Humane Society Fur Ball, which will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane.
