Following the leads of Hurricane Early and Tropical Storm Fiona, Tropical Depression Nine has formed in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
If it develops much further, it could become Tropical Storm or Hurricane Gaston.
The tropical depression is moving in a west-northwest direction at about 15 miles per hour with sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. It should continue moving forward at an even slower speed over the next two days.
The depression formed as Earl threatens North Carolina and portions of the mid-Atlantic coast. Some evacuations were under way along the Eastern Seaboard Wednesday morning. Fiona was expected to pass north of the Leeward Islands Wednesday and steer north, away from Florida.
