SCORE CHAPTER AWARDS GRANT: For the third consecutive year, Service Corps of Retired Executives Pasco-Hernando Chapter 439 was awarded a $5,000 grant to develop and present business seminars co-sponsored by the Pasco and Hernando County public library systems, from Bank of America’s Charitable Foundation. To help give students a good start for the 2010-11 school year, employees, volunteers and physicians at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, 14000 Fivay Road, Hudson, recently provided backpacks filled with supplies for 88 students.

Each year, committee members on the backpack project select candidates from hospital employees and families. This year, more than 41 families were helped.

Members of this year's backpack committee included: the Rev. Jack Long, hospital chaplain; Steven Goldstein; Elaine Snee; Marianne Vigilis, and Johnnie Keegan.

Who's news

Dr. Paul Gubbini, anesthesiologist at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, 6600 Madison St., New Port Richey, was one of four physicians presented the Morton Plant Mease Foundation's 2010 Excellence in Medicine Award.

Along with the other winners, Gubbini was judged to exemplify excellence in clinical practice, leadership and outstanding service to the hospital and community. His name will be added to the Excellence in Medicine recognition wall at the hospital.

Dr. Henry Hanff and Stephen Booth were recently appointed to the board of directors at Community Hospital, 5637 Marine Parkway, New Port Richey.

Hanff, of New Port Richey, is the founder of Florida Joint Replacement and Sports Medicine Center. He has served in the U.S. Air Force at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.

Booth, of west Pasco, is a practicing attorney in real estate, title insurance and building development. He has a background in the U.S. Army as a commissioned second lieutenant and distinguished military graduate, and is a past member of the board of directors for the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce.

There will be a $5 contribution collected at the time of the meeting for nonmembers and $3 for members of either chamber.

The Pasco Aging Network, a coalition of agencies and private providers of elder services in Pasco County, will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at CARES Rao Musunuru Activity Center, 12417 Clock Tower Parkway, Hudson.

The group will meet the second Tuesday of each month at various locations in west Pasco County. Monthly meetings allow agencies and companies to network and learn about different resources and services in the county.

Chili's Grill & Bar Restaurant at 9600 U.S. 19, Port Richey, will be the site of Gulfside Regional Hospice's fundraiser to benefit Rhythm of the Spirit Children's Bereavement Camp, from 4 to 10 p.m. Sept. 13.

The Rhythm of the Spirit Children's Bereavement Camp is held by Gulfside Regional Hospice once a year to benefit children ages 6-12 who have had a loss of a loved one. The children attend the overnight camp and are taught how to respond to their grief in a healthy way through support groups, activity-based counseling and lots of fresh air in a camp setting.

For each flier presented on the day of the event, 10 percent of customers' bills will be donated to the bereavement program. If you do not have a flier, mention to your server that you are supporting Gulfside Regional Hospice.

The Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce will have its annual Awards and Installation Banquet from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16 at Bentley Commons, 38130 Pretty Pond Road, Zephyrhills.

The Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce will hold its inaugural Pigz in Z'Hills event, a backyard and professional barbecue cook-off competition and blues festival, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at Krusen Field, 4626 Krusen Field Road at 20th Street and Alston Avenue, Zephyrhills.

Admission is $3 for adults; children 12 and under get in free. The event will include barbecue food, live blues music, an antique car show, kids activities and games, vendors and more.
