Newsmakers
• Wesley Chapel High School graduate Josh Lane's documentary, The Road to Respect, has been named one of the top three documentaries in the state as part of the Jim Harbin Florida Association for Media in Education student film competition. During the 2009-10 school year, his film was named the top documentary in Pasco County and took first place in the Region 4 competition. Josh will find out in November how he placed in the state competition. The Road to Respect covers the Saint Leo University lacrosse team and its history since the program's inception. This is the third consecutive year that the Wesley Chapel High School Television Production program has placed at the state level of the FAME competition.
• The Take Stock in Children Scholarship program, with the financial support of the Florida Air Museum at Sun 'n Fun, provided seven scholarships to the "Destination Aviation" summer camp in Lakeland. The weeklong camp focused on math, science and technology skills leading to a career in aviation, aerospace and engineering. The camp highlight occurred when each scholar was put at the controls of an airplane to actually fly over Central Florida. Camp participants were: Joshua Link, Ridgewood High; Leila Claassen, Gulf High; Gabriel Soto, J.W. Mitchell High; Michael Marla, Anclote High; Jason Prichard, J.W. Mitchell High; Jorge Ortiz-Vega, Pasco High; and Austin Lewis, Pasco High.
• First United Methodist Church of Land O'Lakes is a business partner with Mary Giella Elementary School for the second year. During the summer, under the guidance of Wink Eash, the church bought, cut and sanded 700 white boards for student use.Teachers use technology (computer, smart boards, dock cameras, etc.), and now every student has his own white board.
Volunteers needed
• Pasco County and Ocean Conservancy will celebrate the International Coastal Cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 18. Volunteers are needed to join nearly 20 teams cleaning up at various sites. The cleanup is organized by Pasco County Recycling in partnership with Keep Pasco Beautiful Inc. and is supported by local trash haulers and businesses. • Local libraries seek youth volunteers to serve on Teen Advisory Boards, which meet regularly to make suggestions on teen programs, books and other materials. Call the library of your choice for information and meeting times.
