TAMPA — Tropical Storm Karl was bringing heavy rain and wind to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula this afternoon. Forecasters expected to move over water again early Thursday, when it's expected to cross into the Bay of Campeche.
At 1 p.m. Wednesday, observers described sustained winds near 55 mph with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extended up to 50 miles from the center.
The storm was expected to weaken further but regain strength when it emerges over water.
Meanwhile, hurricanes Igor and Julia churned over the central Atlantic as Category 4 storms. Neither was forecast Wednesday afternoon to make landfall in the United States, however.
