Sea turtles affected by oil spill treated

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium received four sea turtles Thursday that were victims of the gulf oil spill. The juvenile Kemp's ridley turtles, among the smallest sea turtles, arrived at Tampa International Airport via the Coast Guard from the Louisiana coast and were taken to the aquarium's rehabilitation facility, said spokeswoman Krista Rosado. The new arrivals, which already have been de-oiled, are being evaluated and prepared for future release. This is the second batch of de-oiled sea turtles for the aquarium, Rosado said. The first six turtles arrived in early August and were released successfully in South Florida earlier this month.

Mentors needed by GoodGuides

Goodwill's GoodGuides, a youth mentoring program, is looking for volunteers. GoodGuides, which serves the entire bay area, helps youth ages 12 to 17 who are facing school failure, family violence and other challenges. The adults, who spend one hour a week mentoring, provide a supportive ear and offer guidance to help the youth finish school and build career plans. The program has mentors working in Clearwater; however, more help is needed throughout North Pinellas. To learn more about becoming a GoodGuides mentor, call Joshua Bean at (727) 423-1379 or e-mail goodguides@goodwill-suncoast.com.
