Parent Institute is at West Hernando
The ninth annual Parent Institute to promote parent and community involvement is Oct. 21 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at West Hernando Middle School, 14325 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville. Registration will be from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Exhibitors and a complimentary sandwich dinner are set for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Parent Institute sessions are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; workshops may include reading, math, writing, brain training, FCAT tips, discipline, art, music, learning styles, nutrition, drug and alcohol abuse, gifted sessions, disability awareness, identity theft, and making a budget. Hernando teachers will provide free student workshops for ages 6 through 12. Scribbles Preschool will provide free arts and crafts day care areas for ages 3 to 5.

42 from Springstead honored for AP prowess
Forty-two current and former Springstead High School students have earned AP Scholar Awards to recognize exceptional achievement on AP exams. About 18 percent of nearly 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP exams performed well enough to earn the award.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on AP exam performance. Christopher Sarabalis qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.
Jennifer Draganchuk, Olivia Gustafson, Emily Harlan, Christopher Kelley, Jacob Kelley, Kelly Larsson, Raphael Pintavalle and Christopher Sarabalis qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Russell Alonzo, Tyler Burich and Philip Lakin qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
Thirty-one students qualified for AP Scholar designation by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher.
