CLEARWATER - A man whose vehicle plunged into a retention pond several days ago has died, authorities said.
Stephen Keller Angelillis, 60, was headed west on State Road 580 just past McMullen-Booth Road about 3:15 p.m. Thursday when he crashed through a fence and landed in the pond. Witnesses said Angelillis, who would have turned 61 on Monday, was driving fast and recklessly.
A witness went to the nearby Countryside police substation and reported the accident.
Three bystanders were already in the water when officers arrived. They helped motorcycle officers Michael Hatch and Chad Reed pull the man from the submerged 2006 Honda CRV.
Angelillis was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center. He died at about 5 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Angelillis' family said he had a history of seizures. An autopsy will be conducted.
