ST. PETERSBURG — A 28-year-old Sarasota man died late Monday after crashing into a guardrail on Interstate 275, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Joseph E. Sylvia was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer south on I-275 near the 22nd Avenue N exit ramp, troopers said.
It's unclear why, but the SUV moved into the inside paved shoulder and veered across the southbound lanes, trooper said. Sylvia's vehicle crossed over the outside paved shoulder and struck a guardrail about 11:05 p.m.
Sylvia died at the scene.
An alcohol test is pending, according to the FHP. Troopers did not say whether Sylvia was wearing a seatbelt.
