DUNEDIN

Playground is a finalist to win play set

The city is in the running to win a $25,000 play set to upgrade its library playground. The playground, chosen from among 650 applicants, is one of 10 finalists competing for a portable set of giant foam blocks called an Imagination Playground in a Box. Dunedin is the only city in Florida to remain in the competition. The prize, sponsored by national nonprofit KaBOOM! and Parents magazine, will be awarded to the top three playgrounds as chosen by an online vote. As of Friday afternoon, Dunedin was trailing with only 4 percent of the vote. The library playground — a slide, walkways and stairs next to the library on Douglas Avenue — "is in desperate need of improvement," said library youth services director Phyllis Gorshe. Online voting will continue through next week at http://playspacefinder.kaboom.org/voting/elections/parents.

College to discuss new wetlands plan

Clearwater Christian College will go before the Pinellas County Commission on Tuesday with its latest plan to fill in some wetlands on campus to make way for dorms, parking and a chapel. The commission will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the fifth-floor assembly room in the County Courthouse, 315 Court St. The college has scaled back its plans and is seeking to fill in fewer wetlands, but local environmentalists remain opposed, saying there should be no need to destroy any wetlands.
