UT honors Starkeys with ethics award

Longtime ranchers and philanthropists Marsha and Jay B. Starkey Jr. received the Tampa Bay Ethics Award recently at the University of Tampa. The award is the 20th presented by UT's John H. Sykes College of Business Center for Ethics. The center specifically noted what it called the couple's "innate sense of goodness.'' The Starkeys have created a legacy of conservation through the Starkey Wilderness Preserve, one of the largest undeveloped tracts of land in Pasco County. Both have been active members of the community. Marsha Starkey was named the West Central Florida Girl Scouts' Woman of Distinction in 2008. In 1997, Jay B. Starkey Jr. was honored with the Florida Agriculture Environmental Leadership Award. The Starkeys donated $1 million to aid the expansion of Morton Plant North Bay Hospital and another $1 million to the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay to support the Florida Orchestra and Master Chorale, for which he is a board member emeritus.
