Apply for program grant to fight obesity

UnitedHealth Group and Youth Service in America are sponsoring a "Health Heroes" program grant for Florida residents ages 5 to 25 to design antiobesity programs that will be implemented in their community. Applications for the grant are due by midnight today. Learn more at ysa.org/heroes.

Free shots offered for adult cat adoptions

Adopt an adult cat from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay or Hillsborough County Animal Services and receive free shots for the life of the cat at 440 N Falkenburg Road or 3607 N Armenia Ave. The program runs through February. Call (813) 744-5660.

It's a crucial year for Foster Angel program

The Foster Angel Program has the most children in need than any year before. The program gives Christmas gifts to thousands of foster children in Hillsborough County. To donate new, unwrapped Christmas gifts to the program, call (813) 677-7376.

Parents: You can learn to do a better job

Parents can now register for a class that is part of a national program called STEP, Systematic Training for Effective Parenting, from 6:20 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain High School, 9401 N Boulevard. This class meets on Tuesday evenings for five weeks and Monday and Tuesday on week six. Registration is $36 plus $14.90 for the book. Call (813) 273-3652.

Learn those trippy Latin dance steps

Debra Loran will teach students basic steps, turns and positions used in Latin dances during a four-week "Latin Rhythms Ballroom Dance Workshop," from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at Patel Conservatory, 1010 N MacInnes Place. Students will be able to dance the salsa, merengue, bachata, merengue hustle and tango by the end of the course. The class will also meet on Nov. 3, 10 and 17. No experience necessary.
