TAMPA — Officials are investigating the death Sunday night of a Falkenburg Road jail inmate, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said.

The 33-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released pending notification of a relatives, was found sitting on the floor of his cell during a check at 7 p.m. Sunday, deputies said.

Medical personnel moved the inmate to the jail's medical facility and transported him by ambulance a short time later to Brandon Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 10:10 p.m., deputies said.

The inmate, who had been found mentally incompetent to stand trial on felony battery charges last week, had been scheduled to transfer to the Florida State Hospital, deputies said.

Detectives from the sheriff's Criminal Investigation Division along with the medical examiner will conduct a death investigation, deputies said.
