Southwest Rec debuts new youth programs

Southwest Recreation Complex, 13120 Vonn Road in Largo, has two new youth programs starting up. They include the following:

• Children are invited to come out for Friday Night Dodgeball from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Kids between 6 and 14 will play this high-energy sport inside the gymnasium. Cost is $3 per child to play and an additional $2 for pizza and drinks.

• Registration begins Sunday for Southwest's Youth Winter Basketball League. Boys and girls ages 5-17 will learn fundamental basketball skills, strategy and teamwork to better their game. Younger age groups will focus on player development, while more experienced players will participate in play-offs and an end-of-the-season all-star game. Games will be played on Saturdays beginning Jan. 30-March. League cost is $45 for residents and $56.25 for nonresidents, and all participants will receive a league jersey. Mandatory evaluations are scheduled for Jan. 15. For more information or to register your child, call (727) 518-3125.

Craft sale set for St. Dunstan's Church

St. Dunstan's Anglican Church, 401 West Bay Drive, Largo, will hold a craft sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 13 and Nov. 14. Offerings will include quilts, books, candles and holiday times, jellies and jams. Refreshments will also be sold. For more information, call the church, (727) 581-1435.

Vendors, exhibitors wanted for Fall Festival

The St. Jude's Fall Festival is seeking artists and exhibitors to display and sell items Nov. 5, 6 and 7 at the St. Jude's Fall Festival grounds, corner of Ninth Avenue and 66th Street N. Rental space is 12 by 12 including one table, one chair and electrical supply. Cost is $100. Additional tables, chairs and canopies are available for rent. Deadline to apply is Nov. 2. Panel to discuss USF's art department

The Morean Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., is hosting a panel discussion on the University of South Florida art department from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The discussion will be led by Margaret Miller, director of the Institute for Research in Art at USF and Gregg Parkins, author and assistant professor of communications at the University of Tampa. The discussion will compare and contrast the "Big Eight" who began the program nearly 40 years ago, and the new faculty shaping the student artists at USF. For more information, call (727) 822-7872.

39th Circus McGurkis coming on Saturday

The 39th annual Circus McGurkis, a festive gathering for those committed to creating peace, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lake Vista Park, 1401 62nd Ave. S in St. Petersburg. Columnist and panel to discuss amendments

Florida Politics 101: Conversations with St. Petersburg Times columnist Howard Troxler will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at USF St. Petersburg's Campus Activities Center, 131 Sixth Ave. S. Amending Florida's Constitution will be the center of discussion. Guests include former Secretary of State Kurt Browning and defenders and foes of the Hometown Democracy Amendment. Photo hike at Weedon Island Preserve

Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive NE, is holding a photography hike from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The program provides opportunities for photographers of all levels to capture the natural beauty of the preserve.
