St. Anthony Catholic Church women will put on whimsical beauty pageant

Whimsical beauty pageant scheduled

The St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women will present Miss Garden of Eden Beauty Pageant Nov. 21 in Heffernan Hall at St. Anthony the Abbot Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Blvd. Doors open at 2 p.m. and show time is 3 p.m.

The event is a "whimsical farce," where the audience will be able to select a winner from seven contestants in four different categories.

SPRING HILL

Free music lessons at Canterbury Fayre

Free music classes and a free concert will be highlights of the annual Canterbury Fayre, which will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2301 Deltona Blvd.

Quality Guitars and Musicians Supply will offer free 30-minute music classes, including piano at 9 a.m., drums at 10 a.m., guitar at 11 a.m. and voice at noon. For details, call Jody at (352) 683-2010 or Quality Guitars at (352) 442-7817.

Also, a concert featuring classical, sacred and secular music will begin at 1 p.m. Featured performers include the Hernando Harmonizers (barbershop chorus), Bill Higgins on bagpipe, pianists Sheila Heinrichs and Loa Jackson, organists Keith Schenck and Grant Tolbert, Michael Tranchida on trumpet, soloists Jody Bowes, Ester Marion and MarLynn Shelley, and the debut of the new Weeki Wachee String Quartet.

Annual orchid auction will be held Nov. 20

The Orchid Lovers Club of Spring Hill will present the annual Orchid Auction at 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Spring Hill Enrichment Center, 11375 Cortez Blvd., behind Oak Hill Hospital.

Ed Bugbee of Featherstone Orchids will provide information on each orchid and auction them off to the highest bidders. Several hundred orchids will be auctioned off. Also, the latest OrchidWiz computer program will be auctioned.

SPRING HILL

Scholarship Bingo Bash set for Nov. 20

Knights of Columbus, St. Jude Council 6383 will host a Bingo Bash on Nov. 20 at the hall, 10470 Spring Hill Drive. Doors open at 8 a.m. and games start at 10 a.m. Lunch will be served at halftime.

The menu includes a doughnut, roast beef or turkey sandwich served with potato salad and dessert, coffee and ice tea.

Tickets are $40, which includes lunch. Funds raised will benefit the scholarship program. Call (352) 683-1227.

Boys and Girls Club sale seeks vendors

Vendors are welcome to participate in the Outdoor Yard and Bake Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Boys and Girls Club of Hernando County, 5404 Applegate Drive.

Spaces are $10; vendors can bring their own tables or rent for $5 each. The club will be selling hot dogs, chips and sodas, as well as a variety of bake sale items.

Next downtown street festival set for Nov. 20

The next Brooksville Nights will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 20 throughout downtown Brooksville.

The street festival includes the Love Your Neighbor farmers market, the Market on Main Street, artists' displays, horse-drawn carriage rides, musical entertainment and other family activities.

Painting raffle aids City Hall Art Gallery

The city's Art Gallery is raffling off Abandoned Gate, an original watercolor painting by artist Tom Jones. The painting is valued at $400 and is on display at the gallery, 201 Howell Ave.

Tickets are $3 each or two for $5.

Art League will honor local wildlife artist

The Spring Hill Art League will present a reception for local wildlife artist Valdora Ward from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at Easy Street Home Decor, 100 N Brooksville Ave.

Ward, whose work is shown internationally, paints on a variety of surfaces, including gourds, umbrellas and feathers. Refreshments will be served.

Learn how to use rain barrels at workshop

John Korycki of the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program will present a Rain Barrel Workshop at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 1653 Blaise Drive.

The program will discuss how using rain barrels can be a good way to reduce dependence on irrigation and cope with once-a-week watering restrictions. Participants will each receive a completed rain barrel along with instructions on its proper use, placement and decoration.
