Tampa rescue crew work the scene of a fatal collision Saturday night in Tampa in which one person was killed and five were injured.
TAMPA — One person died and five others were injured when two cars collided in an intersection at Wood Street and El Portal Drive on Saturday night.
Tampa police said at 9:37 p.m. a woman driving a 1992 Cadillac SLS hit a 1992 Honda Civic with five people in it.
The impact pushed the Honda into a wooden pole, pinning one of its passengers inside the car, said Tampa Fire Rescue.
The Honda driver died on scene and his four passengers were taken to area hospitals in serious condition.
Rescuers said the Cadillac driver had non-life-threatening injuries.
Names of those involved have not been released, pending notification of next of kin, and no charges have been announced.
On Sunday, neighbors in the residential area where the crash occurred were not surprised to hear about the news.
"Every day, people don't stop at the stop sign," said Miguel Laguna, who lives at the corner of Wood Street and El Portal Drive. "Every day, they speed down the street."
Ralph and Loralee Clifford, who live on the opposite corner, agree.
"I think they should put in a four-way stop and speed bumps," Ralph Clifford said.
He watches helplessly each day, he said, as cars speed down the 25 mph road in front of his house. He wishes they would slow down.
"We've got kids in this neighborhood," he said.
