Recycle turkey fryer grease at drop-off center
Holiday leftovers are tasty, but the grease left behind by turkey fryers certainly isn't. If you use a turkey fryer to cook up this year's holiday meal, you might have leftover fryer oil and grease and not know what to do with it. However, you can bring it to Clearwater's grease recycling drop-off center at 1701 N Hercules Ave. It's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The grease recycling program is a free service available to Clearwater residents. To recycle household oils, place leftover cooking greases, frying oils, meat drippings and salad dressings into an old plastic bottle or glass jar, bring it to the drop-off site, and pour the contents into the receptacle. Grease that's poured down the drain causes costly sewer backups and blockages.
Art society offering 3 scholarships
Since 1985, the Miniature Art Society of Florida, 2519 McMullen-Booth Road, has awarded more than 80 scholarships to Pinellas County high school seniors who wish to continue their visual arts education. This year, the organization is offering three $1,500 scholarships. Scholarship applications will be accepted until Feb. 26. Applications are available at www.miniatureartsocietyofflorida.com. Water ski holiday show is Saturday
The Tampa Bay Water Ski Show Team's final performance of the season, its holiday show, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Tower Lake. The holiday show is free. Register now for holiday parade
Registration is under way for the 28th Annual Palm Harbor Community Holiday Parade. It will begin at 3 p.m. Dec. 11. The parade route will extend west along Nebraska Avenue from Westlake Boulevard, concluding at Jones Plaza, where children will be able to meet Santa. There's room for walking groups, decorated vehicles, floats and animals. All units and participants must be fully covered by insurance and sign liability waivers. All floats must have a person walking on each side to protect small children. Cost: $20 for businesses; $15 for nonprofit organizations. The deadline to register is Nov. 30. Call (727) 771-6000.
Volunteer phone friends needed
The Palm Harbor Telephone Friends program is in need of volunteers to make calls to those who would like to talk with someone on a regular basis.
