Learn about health at Women's Expo
The Hernando County Medical Alliance will host a Women's Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Lake House, 1202 Kenlake Ave.
The event will include information about health, community and mental health resources, family health and fitness, and nutrition. There will be a number of vendors, a visit by Santa and "Ask the Doctor."

Water Awareness Series continues
The next Hernando County Water Awareness Series session will be from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 3 at the Hernando County Utilities Department, 21030 Cortez Blvd. The topic is "FEMA Flood Mapping, Watersheds and You."
Speakers will include John Burnett from Hernando County government and Gene Altman from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The county and Swiftmud have undertaken a multiyear project to re-examine flood zones and develop detailed, digital flood hazard maps.

Dress up your vessel and join parade
The 25th annual Weeki Wachee River Lighted Christmas Boat Parade will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 starting at Rogers Park, 7244 Shoal Line Blvd.
The event, sponsored by Weeki Wachee Marina, is open to all boat owners. Entry fee is a new, unwrapped toy, which will be donated to the Dawn Center.

See 'Leap Year,' 'Last Holiday' for free
The Hernando County Public Library System will offer free showings of the following movies:
• Leap Year, 2 p.m. Dec. 7, East Hernando Branch Library, 6457 Windmere Road, Ridge Manor West. Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, Adam Scott and John Lithgow star in this 2010 romantic comedy about a woman who concocts an elaborate scheme to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day. The film is rated PG.
• Last Holiday, 2 p.m. Dec. 9, Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive. This 2006 film stars Queen Latifah, Timothy Hutton and LL Cool J. Upon learning that she has a fatal disease, a shy sales clerk decides on an impromptu trip to Europe. The movie is rated PG-13.

Have a pancake breakfast with Santa
The Hernando County La Sertoma Club will host its annual Pancake Breakfast with Santa from 8 to 11 a.m. Dec. 5 at Guido's Restaurant, 7219 Forest Oaks Blvd.
All-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, juice, milk and coffee will be served. A surprise will be given to each child while supplies last. Raffle tickets will be available to win a 32-inch TV and other holiday prizes.

Tickets available for Hi-Lites holiday show
Tickets are on sale for the Hernando Hills Hi-Lites' third annual Christmas Show, which will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 at Mariner United Methodist Church, 7279 Mariner Blvd.
Tickets are $12 for adults ($10 each for groups of 10 or more) and $6 for students; children 3 and younger admitted free.
Chorus members will be dressed as Christmas toys during the first half of the show. They will sing traditional and contemporary Christmas songs. By popular request, the chorus will perform the comical rendition of Seven Days After Christmas. The D'Lites Quartet and special guests will be featured. St. Nick will pass out goodies to patrons. There will be door prizes, and a gift basket will be raffled.
After the show, guests may meet the Hi-Lites and snack on cookies and Christmas treats in the foyer. Santa will be available for pictures.

Reserve a table for vets Christmas party
Korean War Veterans Chapter 174 and Ladies Auxiliary will host a Christmas party Dec. 11 at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive.
Doors open at 1:30 p.m. The party will feature a buffet dinner and a show featuring Irish comedian Danny Justice. Music for dancing will be provided by the Key Notes.
Door prizes will be awarded, and a cash bar will be available.

County to offer tribal belly dance classes
The Hernando County Recreation Department now offers tribal belly dancing classes.
A free class for first-time students will be from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy Park, 895 Kennedy Blvd., and will continue to be offered the first Thursday of each month for first-timers.
There is no size or age limit, and no dancing experience is needed.
Weekly classes are from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Deltona Elementary School, 2055 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill, and Thursdays at Kennedy Park. The cost is $10 per class or $54 for six weeks.

Completing CPR class brings certification
A CPR class will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Spring Hill Enrichment Center, 11375 Cortez Blvd., behind Oak Hill Hospital. Additional classes will be Jan. 6 and 20.
The course meets the guidelines of the American Heart Association and the American Safety and Health Institute. It is designed for professional health care providers, but anyone interested may participate.
The cost is $20. Upon completion, students will receive a two-year certification card.

Adult literacy classes available for free
HEART Literacy Adult Education offers classes in reading, math, language arts, English for Speakers of Other Languages and free pre-GED testing.
Adults 18 years or older interested in finishing a high school degree or brushing up on reading, math or language arts, are invited to stop by one of the four sites offering the free classes and sign up. No appointments necessary.
Classes are offered at the following locations:
• 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Grace World Outreach Church, 20366 Cortez Blvd. Free child care for ages 2 to 5 available.

Agencies seek more volunteer workers
The Florida Department of Children and Families and Mid-Florida Community Services are seeking additional volunteers to help with Access Florida, which offers online assistance for benefits including food stamps, Medicaid and cash assistance.
Volunteers help with the application process from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays at the Retired Senior Volunteer Program office, 880 Kennedy Blvd.

The 2011 Hernando County master gardener calendar is available. The calendars are $3 and may be purchased at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 1653 Blaise Drive.

Education grants for women available
The Philanthropic Educational Organization, through its Program for Continuing Education, offers need-based grants to women whose education was interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and their families.
PEO is a philanthropic group in which women celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
