Hernando County residents who did not finish high school can earn a state of Florida high school diploma through Hernando County Adult and Community Education's high school study program.
The General Education Development tests measure language arts writing, language arts reading, social studies, science and mathematics. The individual tests range from 45 to 80 minutes.
Test takers must be at least 18 and residents of Florida. Younger students may be eligible for the program if there are extenuating circumstances.
Although pretesting is not required, it is recommended. The Test of Adult Basic Education is an assessment of a student's grade-level equivalency and helps counselors place potential test takers in the proper classes if needed.
Students must go to the GED Test Center at Nature Coast Technical High, 4057 California St., Brooksville, to register. A valid government-issued photo ID and a Social Security card are required. Out-of-state students must also have proof of residency.
The GED office is open from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students may also call the school at (352) 797-7088 to make an appointment with a guidance counselor. The GED office can be reached at (352) 797-7091.
The entire battery of tests costs $70. Subject tests are $14. The number of administered tests each month is limited and are first-come, first-served.
