CLEARWATER — Police have identified the 57-year-old man who was killed while crossing Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard on Wednesday evening.

John Robert Nedel, 57, was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, where he was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m.

Nedel was homeless, police said.

Nedel was running, mid-block, from the south side of Gulf-to-Bay near Glenwood Avenue just before 6 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Juan Vazquez-Dezha, who was westbound on Gulf-to-Bay in the curb lane.

Vazquez-Dezha was charged with not having a valid driver's license.
