Mildred Margaret Trettau of Dunedin celebrated her 100th birthday at a Dec. 5 brunch at St. Mathias Lutheran Church, Safety Harbor, with 100 fellow parishioners and friends; and again Dec. 18 with 60 family members and friends at Dunedin Country Club.
She was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Staten Island, N.Y. Her father, Samuel Mitchell, worked on a Staten Island ferry boat as a chief engineer, and her German-born mother, Augusta Sadosky Mitchell, was a homemaker. The family included two sisters, both now deceased, and a brother, August "Bud" Mitchell, 92, of New Port Richey.
After graduating from Staten Island's Curtis High in 1928, she found a job on Wall Street and vividly recalls working through the stock market crash of 1929.
In 1937, she married Ernest Trettau, a New York City policeman. They spent 29 years ...
