New Dalí Museum opens with surreal pomp in downtown St. Petersburg

Salvador Dali imperonator Dana Rizzuto of Clearwater rides along in a horse drawn carriage, Tuesday as the Dali parade makes its way from the old Dali Museum to the new one in downtown St. Petersburg.

Several hundred people gathered outside the new $36 million Dalí Museum on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront Tuesday, following the morning procession led by a horse-drawn carriage from the old museum.

Many wore shorts out on the chilly but sunny museum-front terrace, adding to the Florida festive mood as they were served refreshments and listened to live jazz music.

The ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 11:11 a.m., the time intended to echo the opening date: 1/11/11. The symmetry would have surely pleased the Spanish artist, who loved to play with numbers.
