ST. PETERSBURG — A St. Petersburg man is accused of fatally shooting another man during a brawl outside a bar earlier this month.
Police said Ontario Lamont Thompson, 29, shot 42-year-old Eric Whitfield six times outside Something Different, 2420 Central Avenue, just before 3 a.m. on Jan. 8.
Detectives said some of Thompson's friends got involved in a confrontation with Whitfield inside the bar.
The argument moved outside and escalated into a brawl. At some point, Thompson pulled out a handgun and shot Whitfield six times before fleeing.
Whitfield, recently released from prison, was driven home, where his fiance found him inside his car and called for medical assistance. Whitfield died at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 10 at Bayfront Medical Center.
Thompson was initially arrested on Jan. 13 on several outstanding warrants for probation violation. Police said he ...
