ST. PETERSBURG — Police broke up an off-campus brawl involving two female students from John Hopkins Middle School on Thursday but ended up taking a male student into custody.
The 14-year-old boy was arrested on a charge of felony battery on a law enforcement officer, according to St. Petersburg police. The St. Petersburg Times is withholding his identity because of his age.
According to police, as school let out an officer pulled over when he observed a crowd of about 40 students gathered near the 1600 block of 12th Avenue S around 4:40 p.m.
The officer waded into the crowd to see what was happening and saw two girls fighting, police said. The officer grabbed a 13-year-old girl who was throwing punches at the other girl, police said, and tried to pull her out of the scrum.
