CLEARWATER — An auto mechanic shop was engulfed in flames Sunday night after a car experienced a mechanical failure and set fire to the building, officials said.

Flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters got to Dario's Auto, located at 2065 Gentry St., officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze. The sole occupant of the building, a mechanic, had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, just after 7:15 p.m.

The shop was a total loss after the structure caught fire when a 2003 Ford Expedition experienced a mechanical failure, according to Clearwater Fire and Rescue.

Four other cars were also destroyed in the fire: a 2000 BMW, 1992 Infiniti, 1987 Suzuki and 1993 Trailblazer.

A 1996 Winnebago RV that was parked next to the building was also damaged, fire officials said.
