Karases mark 5 decades together

Socrates and Anastasia Karas of Clearwater celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with dinner at a local restaurant with family from Long Island, N.Y.

A Greek Orthodox priest officiated at the couple's wedding July 3, 1960, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Olean, N.Y.

Mr. Karas served in the Greek royal air force and was a custom tailor by trade. After emigrating from Greece to Australia, he came to Buffalo, N.Y., for a visit in 1958 where he met his future wife. Born Socrates Karakoulakis, he shortened his last name to Karas after becoming an American citizen.

Mrs. Karas graduated from New York's Alfred University and taught fine art for 28 years before retiring from the Uniondale School System, Uniondale, N.Y.

They began vacationing in Clearwater in 1988 and moved here in the early 1990s.

The couple are members of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Clearwater, where Mrs. Karas is a member of the choir.

Other memberships include the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, Macedonian Club, Cretan Club and the Siatistian Businessmen's Association.

They enjoy reading, playing cards, dancing and playing the stock market.

The couple have a son, and a granddaughter.

Bernard and Barbara Schulte of Clearwater celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a five-day cruise. Accompanying them were the couple's children and their families, and Mrs. Schulte's sister.

The Schultes married July 29, 1950, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Catonsville, Md.

They moved to Orlando in 1962 from Baltimore, and came to Clearwater in 1964.

An aeronautical engineer, Mr. Schulte worked at Martin-Marietta in Baltimore and Orlando before his employment at Honeywell in 1963.

While in Maryland, Mrs. Schulte worked in the payroll department of Hutzler's Department Store. After having children, she stayed home to take care of the family and was also active in church and bridge groups.

The couple are members of Light of Christ Catholic Church, Clearwater.

He is a member of Honeywell Retirees Club, Experimental Aircraft Association and the Model Club at Pinellas Park High, where he also volunteers as a tutor.

Her memberships include the Honeywell Retirees Club, Light of Christ Women's Guild and bridge clubs.

The Schultes enjoy world travel and have toured many countries and most of the United States.

They have four children; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Orazio and Mary Cali of Palm Harbor celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at the Italian-American Club of Clearwater, where they are members.

The couple married Aug. 23, 1940, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

They came here in 1988 from New York.

He was an ironworker and inspector.

She was a dressmaker.

The Calis have two children and a grandchild.

A recent graduate of the college student affairs (masters of education) program at the University of South Florida, Colleen Redmond was awarded first place in the 2010 NASPA Annual Conference YouTube Video Contest.

Her winning submission, titled Sherry Baguire, was loosely based on the movie Jerry Maguire and touches on Sherry's vision of the future of student affairs in a college setting. Upon winning first place, Redmond had the privilege of meeting and formally introducing former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during the NASPA Conference in Chicago this past spring.

Redmond, the daughter of Karen and Lou Redmond of Dunedin, graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor of science and is also a graduate of Dunedin High.
