Video contest brings School $2,000 award

Big Lots has given Spring Hill Elementary School $2,000 for winning one of the awards in the retailer's annual "Lots2Give" video contest.

The school presented a short video describing how it could benefit from financial help. Visitors to the Big Lots website then voted for their favorite video.

Spring Hill Elementary assistant principal Terri Dewey said, "We rallied all our teachers, families and friends to go online and vote for our video."

School representatives accepted a ceremonial check at the Big Lots store on U.S. 19 on Aug. 13. The funds will arrive later, boosted with an extra $143 the store collected through in-store donations.

Dewey said school officials are looking at enhancing the school's technology, possibly with some webcams, which can connect students to other schools and teachers; iPod touch devices; digital cameras; and recorders.

"We are very excited to get the money and put it to good use," she said. "We very much appreciate Big Lots."
