Thunderstorms could break record for rain in Tampa

Thunderstorms rolling into Tampa Bay late Tuesday afternoon could bring up to 3 inches of rain, forecaster said.

Heavy rain could start as early as 3 p.m. or as late as 8 p.m., said Bay News 9 meteorologist Mike Clay.

In Tampa, the expected 2 to 3 inches of rain could break a record for January. Tampa has seen 4.86 inches of rain so far this month. The record was 8 inches set in 1948.

"It's been a very wet January," Clay said. "This is going to get us way up there in one of the wettest Januarys we've had."

St. Petersburg has seen 1.49 inches of rain this month.

The storm heading toward Tampa Bay also could bring a tornado watch, Clay said.
